Went to the doctor last week and they couldn't find any swelling in my lymph nodes which is good. They've scheduled me for a mammogram. I came home and tried using a homeopathic remedy called symphytum and it worked after about 4 doses in one day. The pain and burning are gone. Oh and I'm 52.

Symphytum is a homeopathic remedy. You can find books on homeopathy at the health food store or library or online. I've gotten pretty into it. Symphytum can help tissue around bones heal. I used it because it felt like the whole covering around my rib cage was on fire. Also, you may be able to find a good homeopath in your area who could help you. Hope your MRI shows nothing to worry about. My mammogram has still not been scheduled.

Doctor say's it could be hormonal related and fibrocystic breast. I will do a search on Fibrocystic breast on line and get more info. also i took primrose oil, and it did help with the pain and the pain seems to be gone.. keep me posted Rene and wishing you luck...

I have had a burning feeling for about 3 months. It is in my left breasts, in my armpit, my back and sometimes in my neck and lower left rib cage. It is all on the left side. I'v been to the doctor and he says that it is probable just anxiety which i don't believe because i had the same problem 2 years ago for the same amount of time and it went away for 2 years and i never had a problem. The doctor took some blood and did an ekg. I have not got the results in yet. This also seems to bother me more when I am sitting down or doing nothing. Please keep in touch with me on this and what we find out together. Thanks!

I have the same burning that you have mentioned.
I have it in the back, breast, chest, and under
the arm a little bit. My doctor also suspects
anxiety which I know I have but find it hard to
believe that burning is caused from that.
Have you ever found out anything more on your
burning ?????

Hi! I stumbled onto your web site the other night and was surprised to find someone else had the same thing I have. Back in about the mid '90s, I asked my doctor about this pain/burning on my left side. He said it was probably irritated nerves from my bra(being quite largely endowed). I asked him two more times about it, but he didn't seem to want to dwell on that problem.I am going to an OB/GYN tomorrow for a check up and will ask him about it.It does come and go and I also notice it more when I'm in bed or not moving around too much, but it also hurts in the breast and other areas like you all have mentioned. It also is sore to the touch all the time (like a bad bruise). Do any of you have that symptom? I am 60 years old and fairly healthy. I am very interested in what the rest of you find out from your doctors and test results.

I have seen 3 doctors they all say either arthritis or bra that does not fit. I have worn the same kind of bra all my life (18 hour) I don't know that any of them are correct but what can you do? I notice it most if riding in a car or sitting in the recliner. Hardly ever have it at work. I don't have it as often as I did before. It's a mistery.

I hate this for all of us, but so glad to find others who have similar symptons. I have had burning and stinging under left breast going on three years! It is mostly during the day and when I am sitting or driving, as others mentioned. I have had mammagrams, ultrasound, MRI, lung xrays, heart strss tests, you name it. I am told it is more prevalent among women who are depressed, anxious or stressed. I have been treated with anti depressants, anti inflammatories, acupuncture, adjustments, massage, but COLD presses help more than anything. It does radiate down my arm toward my elbow and little finger. It may be neurologial or it may be due to some of my ribs pressing on a nerve..I still don't know and would love some relief. IT is suggested that arthritis or costochronditis is the culprit, but nothing I have tried ends the pain.

Hi Shelby ~ Received your email but really don't have too much to tell you right now. I went to my OB/GYN a couple weeks ago but I didn't have a chance to ask him about it. I went to my primary doctor right after that and told him about this problem (AGAIN!) but he still has no idea what it is. I will be going for a mammogram in the near future and will talk to someone there about it. This must be a unique problem because doctors are very evasive about it. Not sure if mammogram will relate anything -- it sure hasn't for the other people who have emailed into this site. Will let you know what I find out with the mammogram.

I can't find any doctor that is concerned about this burning. I wondered about heart also, because almost everyone in my family have died from heart attacks, but I had a sonogram of the heart and it showed nothing. They all say Arthritis. It's hard for me to believe too. I do have a lot of stress at work. Who knows. My back hurts really bad now too, which my doctor says is arthritis. Sometimes I don't believe doctors, but what can we do?

I have replied here before on aug 8th. Since then I have had many tests done as far as ecocardiogram (looking at the heart) stress test, breathing test, blood taken for the lipid panel which is pretty much chol. check and an ekg. The doctor wanted to rule out the heart. There was nothing found other than I have a very healthy heart although the pain sometimes does feel as if it is the heart. He says it is just stress. Two weeks ago I went to my obgyn and she told me that something is stimulating the tissue and the nerves in my left breast which can cause burning and numbness in what feels like the heart and in the arm and pain in your back. She gave me my breast exam and said she doesn't feel anything that pops out at her which would make her wonder other than she said she does feel more fatty tissue in the left breast than in the right breast but she made it clear to me that it wasn't a lump but she was going to refer me to a breast specialist to see what he thought on it on Oct 30. She said she said it's probably nothing but she wants to be safe than sorry. So I asked her what causes the breast pain and the stimulation and she said anything even if your the bit upset or if your stressed out. She said sometimes it may hurt more than other times, it depends. She said to take 800mg of vitamin E daily and that this is very important for those who have similar issues. It's very good for breast pain or burning. I have been taking it for 2 weeks now and I am amazed how much better it has gotten. Try it ladies! I'll keep you updated.

Thank you all for responding. I tried the VIT. E and it did not seem to help. I have recently visited a Chiropractor and applied kinesiologist who tells me my ribs are torqued and likely these nerves are being affected, so I am going through some treatment with him at the moment. If any of you have been in an accident or were injured in that area or play tennis and golf or other sports which torque your body, you may want to look into this aspect.

Thanks for your help.

I have been checking in on this website periodically to see if anyone has found an answer to our problem. There have been many suggestions as to what it might be, but the reply from Shelby was of interest to me. She mentioned having gone to a Chiroprator/Kinesiologist who mentioned about torqued ribs that could cause the nerves to be affected. Have any of you had children and carried them on your left hip? I had three BIG boys and carried all three that way when they were a little older than newborn. Think of what that could do to a persons ribs! It's a thought! I also go to a Chiroprator/Kinesiologist and will ask him about this next time I see him. I can't see how anxiety and stress would affect only one side of a person's body. Don't you think both would be affected?? Just thought I would bring this up to see what anyone else might have to say.

Like all of you, it really worries me. Also besides the burning, my back has been hurting a lot. It is usually in the middle of my back, sometimes lower and hurts all the way through my body. I used to have it only in the morning but now it seems to last all day. I had a lower back x-ray and 1 doctor told me I had Arthritis, but also may be caused by stress. I have a lot of that at work. Also the burning in my left breast is still there once in awhile. If I push on it and hold it it will stop burning. The idea about taking 800 mill. of Vit. E might be good. I started that yesterday but someone else told me that too much vit.E could cause body odor. I sure don't want that.

I haven't had a period for 15 years but I am so hot most of the time and perspire a lot. I am overweight which I have always blamed the temp. on that. Wonder if any of you have that too.

Keep writing.

Hi

I had my yearly check-up with my doctor two weeks ago. On examination he felt something he didn't like in my right breast. I do have fibrocystic disease and have always had more of a ropey feeling in the right breast than the left breast. I am post menopausal - and when I first went through menopause this ropey texture in the breast seemed to fade away. However, when I went on HRT it came back as he said it would. I was on HRT for about 3 years and went off last November as again he did not like what he was feeling in the breast although a mammogram showed nothing. He sent me for an ultrasound which also came back o.k. In any event I went off the HRT and now a year later he is finding the same thing. In Canada once you are 50 you don't need a referral from a doctor to get a mammo - they have clinics set up and it is an automatic recall every 2 years, which is great. So, he told me to call the clinic and schedule a mammo even though it has only been a year since I was there; I am going on Tues Nov 25. Now, what is interesting is that since he told me this two weeks ago I have been having this burning feeling in the breast and sometimes under the armpit whereas I did not have it before. After reading all of your messages and what some of your docs have to say about stress - I am wondering if I have been thinking and worrying about it; plus I have been dealing with some health issues of my mom's lately - so stress may be a factor. In any event I will be asking the nurses at the clinic. All of them being women who do this testing - I may be able to get a straight-forward answer as they can relate more than men. I will let all of you know what I find out if anything.

I have also experinced this burning in my left breast and pain under my left rib. I found the entry about the torqued ribs interesting. I had a c-section with my son who was born premature and when the doctor pushed to get the after birth out I felt it. I know that I was not suposed to feel that but I felt the pressure really bad. My son did not get out of the hospital until months later. I did not hurt with that pain until I went back to work and was lifting clothes at work and reaching over my head. That is when I had to go to the emergency room and they told me that the doctor had injured my ligaments along my ribs on my left side. They perscribed antiimflamitory medication and rest , and in time I got better. I now am having trouble again but I guess I will have to deal with the pain because my son is now 9years old and has cerebral palsy and I have to lift him everyday. I also can not take alieve or any other kind of antiimflamitory medication because I have stomach trouble from years of taking them and now I am on Previcid. I am just taking one day at a time and trusting in the Lord for a healing. I have take glacosamine. It helps some what and is natural. It cushions the joints.

Good luck to everyone.

I know that these symptons may have a different source, however, my smyptons have decreased after massage in the area that is affected which is close to the sternum under the left breast. We, the kinesiologist, chiropractor and the massage therapist think I have torn some facia and it has healed improperly creating scare tissue which can burn and sting as mine does. ANY of you have lifted and carried children, been athletic or received blows to your painful area may want to seek some alternative healing once your DR. has ruled out anything that can be medically treated.

Good luck.

I just came across this thread while searching the web to find out what this sudden burning/stabbing pain on my left side (under the arm, next to my breast) could be. It strikes suddenly, feels a bit like someone injected me with hot acid (!) then fades quickly. I've had about 4 or 5 of these pains this morning - the first time ever. However, I do get a kind of constant, dull ache (lasts all day and then some) in my left breast and left chest from time to time, and have recently had that. I'm 51, still menstruating (and no menopausal symptoms) and in good health. 5'7", 145 lbs. However, I DON'T exercise at all, and I AM under a lot of stress at work, although it's "good" stress. Still, I wonder if that's the problem? I have recently had a mammogram ... no problems there but I do have fibrocystic breasts and have had several biopsies (all negative).

Just thought I'd add my info to this mix. Good luck to all of you. Since several of us have similar symptoms, it seems to me that this is a definite syndrome of some sort and deserves attention by our medical professionals! I'll be visiting my Ob-Gyn soon and will suggest that. Meanwhile, I'll be watching this thread for more info, and I'll try the Vitamin E.

I have been told I have anxiety for about 1.5 yrs now. All of the sudden! It started with the following happening quickly and all at once like a rush through my system and end with feeling like I needed to go to the bathroom which ususally happened... Now, I get this during, after, or sometimes alone (the burning-stinging) feeling in my left upper breast area too. Stress? Not sure. Mine too acts up usually, as does my anxiety, when I am most relaxed. Watching TV at night or when I get into bed. I hate it. It has made me nervous not to be busy, you know?? THis is what occurs in this order: suddenly, I get a buzzy feeling in my head, slight disoriented feeling, like I am there but sort of not, but very alert., Then, I get slightly tingly all over, usually on my left side and very achy/bruisy feeling all over my body now. My neck & shoulders feel stiff and bruisy/achy, my arms feel heavy and very achy, like what I thought arthritis felt like-dont have it i dont think, my left leg gets it too sometimes. Stroke was ruled out, I had a beautiful EKG & holter monitor test. My Dr. sugg it may be ANGINA. she sugg this when she gave me my holter monitor but then i got a call back from another md telling me my holter mon test was perfect/healty strong heart! But the quest about ANGINA never got addressed, unless they can tell if you have it by the holter test??? WONDERING... I read symptoms of ANGIINA and sounds alot like waht I get. My fam has no hist of heart troubles either. This new STINGY/BURNING feeling is fairly new. I cry alot thinking something is going to happen to me that no one is checking properly or just blaming it on stress/anxiety. maybe it is is just that-GOOD if it is. but can it be? I AM SCARED. I am waiting for my med ins to kick in again soon. My CHIROPRACTOR does nt hear about the burning but the other stuff and my X-RAY came back okay, no pinched nerves, as sugg by an md also. MY CHIRO did nerological exam and saw no signs of anything wrong there, aas far has he could tell anyway. he said if something was up in that area he would be able to detect it by his exacm of my motor skils, etc... HE Ruled out MS also. ANYONE FIND OUT ANYTHING ELSE?? ANYONE HAD ANGINA SUGGESTED? ANYONE WITH ANGINA THAT COULD ELABORATE?? PLEASE HELP. I LIVE WITH THIS ON MY MIND DAILY AND IT SCARES ME. I AM 31 AND NEVER HAD KIDS. AND JUST WANT TO BE HEALTHY.

BY THE WAY, AT THE TIME THE HOLTER TEST AND EKG WAS GIVEN, SHE TOLD ME THAT SINCE I COULD LOCALIZE THE SHARP PAIN THAT I HAD BEFOR THE BURNING SET IN IN MY LEFT STURNUM AREA WAS AN INFLAMED STURNUM AND GAVE ME NAPROXIN. WORKED WELL. DONT HAVE THAT PAIN ANYMORE BUT NOW HAVE THIS BURNING STINGING PAIN FOR TH PAST FEW WEEKS OR SO ABOVE THE INFLAMMED AREA WAS DETECTED AND IN MY BREAST NEAR WHERE THE
BREAST BEGINS IN YOUR MID SECTION...

It's pretty unbeliavable that many women who have posted responses here have similar symptoms as I do. I've also been having a burning feeling on my left breast for a few weeks now, and I'm really scared. I'll be seeing my doctor next week, and I'm hoping that nothing serious will come out of it. I've had chest pains in the past as well as numbness/a tickling feeling on my left arm, radiating from my chest all the way down to my fingertips. I was told by several doctors that this was caused because of stress, anxiety, or depression. I'm only 31, and I don't think I have anything of this kind in my family history. I'll keep everyone posted on what my doctor says next week. Be well...

I have been reading all your entries with interest as I am a Registered Nurse with the same burning, stinging problems as you all have. I had done a ton of research on this subject and also have come to the conclusion that the medical profession (of which I am a part of) has NO idea about women's health issues and concerns as it seems to be low priority as health issues go (Dr. Susan Lark is the exception - go to her website www.DrLark.com - it is a wealth of interesting information) My best guess about all this is that many of you(myself included) talk of burning and stinging on the LEFT side (heart side). I am thinking anxiety has a great deal to do with the burning feeling as well as the possiblity of arthritis. Noone seems to know for sure. I am so please that we are supporting each other and trying to help each other out. Keep the messages coming! Maybe amongst ourselves we can help the solve the problem

Hi Christina

I can definitely relate to you. I just found this web site and have lots of the sames issues going on. I wish I could find a answer - as it really scares me alot. The doctors have suggest MS, fibromyalgia, anxiety. I do also feel quite often that it seems to be heart related since it feels like my heart is really flopping around alot when this comes on. I will reply again soon. I'm just on my way out the door from work.

Hi Pam Ebert: Just received your message and immediately looked up the word Costochondritis on the internet. This sure sounds reasonable as a possible definition of all our problems. I found two websites in case you want to look up the info I found: www>askwaltstollmd.com/archives/costochon.html and www.drmirkin.com/morehealth/G234.html. There might be some interesting information for anyone having this burning feeling. Let me know what any of you think. Judy

Let me start by saying that I am so glad that I found this website. I am 39, female, healthy, athletic, non-smoker/drinker, and the mother of 3. The burning started about 5-years ago, after the birth of my second child. While nursing, the burning continued, so I was then prescribed antibotics on several occasions. The burning continued (in my right breast) so a mammogram was ordered. The result was NORMAL. Five years later, I'm still dealing with the same issue. I've had a total of 4 mammograms and they all have come back a normal. The first question asked by the technician (conducting the mammogram) was, What is my Caffine Intake? Not sure if many of you consume caffine (soda, coffee, tea, chocolate), but supposedly this can trigger some inflammation, which can result into a burning sensation. Also, Vitamin E was suggested to sooth/elimate the burining sensation. I'm no medical doctor, but in reading some the messages above, I do see that many of us do share a common link, which is STRESS. I notice that whenever my life is somewhat hectic or stressful, in combination with the caffine, it does trigger these burning epiodes. I've also been told by my doctor that I too, have anxiety. Not saying that this is the cause, but there could easily be a link.`Let me know what you think. Some mentioned that they were afraid to go to the doctor. Just remember, that it's better safe than sorry. I know that the thought of going to the doctor for some, can be rather stressful. You have only one life to live, and it's your actions that will determine how your life is lived (within your control). Do take matters in you own hand because there's nothing to fear but fear itself.....

Ladies I have had the same burning sensation in my left breast, armpit - also neck and behind shoulderblade when really bad. More noticeable when Iam not busy. Constant now for over a year.At first I thought I had intraductile thrush as I was breastfeeding when it first began. Iam 38 but am also being investigated for arthritis - I see a rheumatologist for the first time in about 3 weeks from now. This is the first time I have heard of costochondritis but I believe it is arthritis of the sternum ,ribcage area that causes localised non cyclic pain in the breast. I also have the same burning pain behind my knee - so Iam keen to find out if it is related. My Dr could find nothing wrong with my breast but the pain continues. I am interested if the Rheumatologist can help me. Iam glad to know others have this problem too - but sympathise as it is a very worrying and wearisome problem. Will keep you posted.

I will visit my doctor tomorrow who has done every test known to man. I get the results then. I must add that for the past three days now I have been taking Alprazolam 3x's per day and so far, no episodes whatsoever. I pray it is strictly anxiety/panic attacks. I also pray at they will go away. I will let you know what I find out. To review my symptoms read above (its the long, lenghthy posting) anyone have any of those symptoms? panic attacks? do they do this to you? I dont use caffine, drugs or drink.

Christina,

I am sorry to hear about your problems with anxiety. I am also suffering from anxiety and am too tired of living with it daily. It was interesting to hear you describe what you said was a feeling like you are not there but are very aware. The same thing happens to me and I have a hard time describing it to people because they don't understand. I stumbled across your pisting because I was searching for information about burning and tingling in the back of my neck going up through my head, occassionally I have this happen in my chest but it usually happens in the neck and base of my head. I have had an MRI and it came back normal, but since have had problems with numbness in my left hand and face with tingling of the lips and countless numbers of sleepless nights waking up feeling just has you have described. It is scary and very lonely feeling when this happens. How do you manage these episodes? I would love to get rid of this problem and get on with my life. Like you these episodes happened very suddenly out of no where and I am about your age will be 31 in May.

I'm glad to see a few new posts today.

I have to agree that the burning episodes seem to come from no where. I've heard the anxiety thing from my doctor too. I'll admit I feel really anxious - but often it seems like the anxiety is coming from these problems of feeling lousy & worrying about the weird feeling in my chest, back & breast area. I seem to have a constant achy feeling right below my left breast, almost in the center of my chest. I can really sympathize with you all because this really stinks. It is hard to explain to others and I try not to talk about it since I don't want my friends to get sick of me complaining.

If anyone finds anything out please let me know. Kate, my doctor has also mention arthritis to me. I have pain in my hips & knees also but I don't know if it's realated.

Just looking over this site again and wondered if anyone here suffers from any autoimmune diseases? I saw somewhere on a site about costochondritis (assuming that is perhaps the cause of our breast pain) that it often occurs as a symptom of autoimmune disease - fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus etc - these are also all arthritic diseases. It seems to me that everyone posting here has similar symptoms. Autoimmune diseases are said to be more common in women than men. Has anyone being investigated for this? I do feel that Drs often say stress to women and of course we are stressed! It's too easy to say that especially if there is no evidence on physical examination.Does anyone get pain elsewhere in their fingers, toes, knees etc. I'd be interested to know. Judi your joint pain may be related to your breast pain. Also fatigue is a big factor in joint pain/arthritis. I definitely am going to ask the rheumatologist if there is a connection here. Please keep on posting your concerns everyone.

Well, I went to the doctor and through all of those tests that i told you they took, ALL PERFECT I am sooooo relieved. She said, "We have looked at you from head and toe, there is nothing physiologically wrong with you. You are in perfect health all the way around".

I sugg the following test to anyone with any or most of my symptoms:
anti-nuclear antibodies, lipid panel tests, comprehensive chemistry panel, rheumatoid arthritis test, sedimentation rate (SED), TSH

you can see what each of these tests look for if you go to GOOGLE.COM and enter the phrase "what does the test " " look for?" and it will tell you exactly what that test is for and what it means. i learned alot here. and knowing what i was tested for and knowing its negative eased my mind on many, many levels. I highly recommend it.

She did notice one thing... that my joint test was showing numbers that (although nothing major or to worry about) was indicating some inflammation, which explains the constant pain for the past yr on my left side. So she took more blood to run a diff test for it. If it is positive then she will treat me for it. If negative, she is going to put me through test for carpal tunnel.

I am so very relieved that nothing major is wrong with my body. They tested me extensively. Thank the Lord! I said many prayers!

She did give me something called Lexapro for mild depression/generalized anxiety. I took the first one this morning. I will let you know what I think. She thinks that I have post-stress syndrome from an unfortunate event that took place and ended right before the episodes of panic attacks took place... So she highly sugg counseling to take away the attacks, she put me on this med once a day to avoid them however until i get the counseling to see if that is what will take them away. She said that all of the things that my body went through even though on one side sometimes and the other symptoms definitely can actually be from panic attacks. not just anxiety attacks. i guess panic attacks are more severe with worse symptoms and effects on your body.

It's amazing to me that so many people share the same issues. Just today I have noticed a burning sensation in my left breast. It's not at the rib cage though, like alot of you. My burning is at the top of my breast, toward the center of my chest. Does anyone else have it in this area? I'm quite concerned. I do have anxiety issues, although I was feeling quite well until I started feeling this and now I'm stressed again! The burning isn't severe. It's just enough so to cause concern. It lasts for a few seconds and comes and goes about every 5 minutes. Any comments, help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Do not seem to hurt much while at work sitting at a desk but get in the car and come home it hurts all evening. I have asked 3 doctors, they all say arthritis. I'm 62 years old in good health otherwise (except for the burning under the left breast sometimes). My doctors seem to think stress has a lot to do with it too.

Hi Carol ~ I am 60 years old and have always had back problems, lower back more lately. I had some treatments done, by my chiropractor, on the lower back, but still had the pain. Doctor said that my back muscles needed some strengthening and he suggested I do some lower back exercising which included lying on the floor with a rolled- up towel under my neck and doing leg lifts, leg cross-overs, and pulling knees up to chest once a day. It does help. I used to work at a desk and didn't get too much exercise, which may have resulted in weak muscles. I also have the left-side burning feeling and still do not know what causes it, but I am interested in the costochondritis explanation. I put a couple website addresses on my note to Pam Ebert dated 1/1/04 if you are interested in reading more information about it. Good luck! Judy

However, I don't understand the burning feeling that I have and it is worrying me. Does the medical profession know anything?? Could it be something we all are eating. Stress is always an easy answer to a medical condition no one knows enough about. I have planned a follow up appointment with my general physician, but I'm sure they will give me the robe-a-dope!! Well I posted a message before about this burning pain in the breast. I said I was going to a rheumatologist for my joint pain and I did. Guess what? He said stress as well as just about every other Dr mentioned on this forum topic! Apparently my joint pain and my burning pain are all stress. He did prescribe more anti-inflammatories as well as a mild anti - depressant for fatigue. He said he initially thought I had fibromyalgia but decided I did not have enough symptoms for that. I'm glad I don't have that - but Iam mystified as to why stress causes physical pain in women. Are we all a particular personality type here? Because certainly this pain is all to real to me, as it is to all of you. Why would we do this to ourselves? Is it stress or a medical condition other than that? Because after reading other people's posts here we all seem to check out ok physically but have similar stories. Incidentally I'm not too keen on taking the antidepressant - I think if I got myself into this I can get myself out - if it is stress. I'm going to try and be kinder to myself and see what happens next. But that dosen't mean I totally buy this stress diagnosis - I'm going to see what I can find out about stress. It seems to me that it could still be a handy waste basket diagnosis for what is perceived by others as paranoid women. At least that's what I felt like. I'll keep my mind open. What does anyone else think?

I have posted before and after three years still have the burning in my left brest close to the sternum, but under my breast. My massage theripist says that it is soft tissue that is attached to the rib heads and that it should not be so tender after three years, but I have had a bone scan, all the breast tests, chest x-rays,etc.
I do have torgued ribs and I do have some osteoarthritis in my lower back and have suffered from low back pain for years. Panic attacks were treated with low dose of Zoloft, but do not help the pain, nor does antinflamatory drugs. I take a cross the counter anti inflam and it gives some relief. There is not enough research on these type of problems and many times are written off as stress, which is just a way of saying "The Dr. has no idea". My chiropractor tells me that the tenderness and burning could last forever...I do know it is inflammation for I had a breast MRI last year that said I had focal inflammation..but nothing seems to remedy it completely.
Wish I had an answer, but do enjoy interacting with this sight.

I just stumbled across this site after having many of the symptoms mentioned in this forum.
It started out 1 1/2 years ago not being able to swallow on the right side of my throat...food would get stuck in the middle and I would panic which made it that much worse. My body would tingle til I almost felt like I was going to pass out...just as Connie and Christina wrote about the feeling of not being there.but, being extremely aware of what's going on inside of your own skin. Went through many test, they found nothing.
About a year ago had sharp burning pains on the right side of my chest, under my arm and down my arm...since my dad suffering with heart disease, I went to the ER and they admitted me.
I had many test done including a stress test.
Everything came back great, except they found I had high cholesterol.
October, under my arms were on fire, it traveled across my chest and down my right arm. My breasts were very sore for almost a week.

In Jan. I noticed a lump growing under my left armpit, starting out small and now almost to the point where the defination under my arm is non-noticeable. I had went to the dr. 2 days ago, and had told him of the problem , and he had called it...hidradenitis suppurativa...saying that many drs. misdiagnos it, but, one of the symptoms is burning under the arm and around the surface. He put me on antibiotics for 1 week and told me to use warm to hot compresses 10 min each night. The good news is that it will go away...but, the bad news is that once you have this condition, it keeps coming back and needs to be retreated. I've looked it up on the web, and it probably is a part of what of what I have , but, doesn't mention my other symptoms.
I believe my husband is starting to think I'm a hypocondriac, he thinks I keep looking for problems...but, everything is truly real to me, and the problem is yet to be addressed.

I usually dismiss the "stress" factor as a patronizing male answer. However,in this case, I may submit that mine was caused in part by stress.

I had the exact same worrisome burning sensations on the left side. I am 39 and fit but approaching the one year anniversary of a complete hysterectomy (a stressful occasion). As soon as I experienced the burning armpit and sensitive breast I stopped taking estrogen, which I had been on for about 4 months.

I refused to think the burning was stress. After reading about cancer inducing "parabens" in cosmetics and plastics I changed my handcream, body lotions and deodorant.

Immediately, I felt I had taken charge and in a week the burning went away.

It could be stress or maybe the cosmetics - I strongly recommend reading up on paraben and estrogen mimickers. I find it curious that no one so far has mentioned deodorant.

Robin,

I can sympathize with you , my husband also thinks that I am a hypochondriac. I definitely feel like one sometimes, but know that what I feel is real. Like you I do not think we are always taken seriously when there is something wrong. I have noticed one thing many of us are around the same age, probably most Drs. do not think of something physical first because we are not in a high risk group for many of the potentially serious things that could cause these symptoms or similar ones. Yet as all of you can surely attest it doesn't make them any less real or worrisome to us. Like many of you I am tired of feeling this way and want my life back. The question is how am I going to get it back? Tonight I woke up with my heart thumping and racing so hard, sweaty palms, pain in my left arm, nausea, tingling in my hands and a feeling like I was going to pass out. I was literally shaking so hard the room I was in was shaking. Unfortunately I felt very helpless, if I woke my husband up I would have to endure yelling and insults, and I am quite certain that would not help. I think that maybe I should see a Dr during the day but with two kids to get on and off the bus and an almost three year old home during the day, when am I going to have the time? Besides will it be worth it to just hear that they don't know and oh by the way here is an antidepressant. Who said anything about depression? Sorry to sound sarcastic but the overwhelming sense of now what as begun to take over. I certainly don't like feeling this way and know that I wouldn't make myself have these experiences. Well anyway I have gone on long enough. I am wishing all who have posted best wishes and the best of health.

P.S. As a thought maybe we should try to come up with a list of common symptoms among those who have posted. Who knows maybe all of us working together can figure this out, at the very least help us and others understand that there are other people who have similar experiences who are otherwise quite normal.

Hey Jennefer - Thank you for your information about parabens. It is extremely interesting to me. I was wondering if you would be interested in letting us know which products(deodurant, body lotions etc) you switched to...I have done some research and found a list of paraben free products but the list is lengthy. We would all appreciate you letting us know what is working for you. Thank you for giving us another perspective!!! I guess another thing worth considering is avoiding phthalates. My research lead me to understand that Aveda, The Body Shop and Neways all are phthalate -free but unfortunately use parabens as preservatives. Now if we could just find products that avoid both -and still be able to smell somewhat nice and not like wild boars! Thanks again for your insights and we will all be looking forward to hearing from you. Diane

I came accross this sight yesterday while researching a burning sensation in upper back. It is great to know that I'm not the only one having these problems. I do not have the pain under my armpit, but have all the other symptoms, along with knots through out my upper back. They are massive and cause allot of pain. I have also been to the Dr. regarding this. I've gone to Physical therapy for tendonitis. Helped at first, especially the ultra sound I received on my upper back before working out. After physical therapy, my back would hurt worse. I also have anxiety and am taking Zoloft. I am also taking naproxin for the pain. It does not work for me. I was wondering if anyone else has high blood pressure?I have to say that Zoloft is the miricle drug, but does not take away the pain. I have been having this pain for a little over a year now. I started having this pain when I found out that my boyfriend was going to Iraq. He will be home next week, so I'm hoping that if it is stress, it will be go away when he comes home. I sometimes lay on the floor and cry because I'm in so much pain. My father had a heart attack a little over a year, and so I feel that I'm having a heart attack sometimes. My family thinks I'm crazy, so it's nice to know I'm not the only one out there. For a min. there, I started to think that I was crazy. I know that this is a long message, but it's so nice to be able to share this with other people. My mother also was diagnosed with breast 3 years ago. She is in remission now, so I also think about cancer in the back of my head. I don't have any kids yet, but want to have some shortly. I'm hoping that this will not take away from that. Just curious if anyone has a desk job? I do and have been told that that could have something to do with it. Please keep me updated, all of you, and I will do the same.

Hey Cheryl and everyone else with this burning problem. I'm so sorry to hear of all the pain that you've had to endure. I have also had this burning. My story is way too long to get into, but I wanted to say I can sympathize with you. My burning is mainly along my left side - including my breast and rib area. The worst of it, though, is in the center of my back. Not to confuse everyone, but it started out as a chest pain back last October. I was told it was anxiety, but found that very hard to believe because - while I have stress - I certainly wasn't overwhelmed by it. I was put on Zoloft and I can't see that it helped at all. I weaned myself off of it (that's another horror story). I have been to my doctor so many times they aren't taking me seriously. I have had the neck x-ray which showed a bone spur. I ASSumed that was the cause of this pain, but was told that physical therapy and medicine would make it better. Guess what? It hasn't. I feel the burning getting worse and worse every day. I feel like no one will listen to me and the longer this has gone on, the more damage it has caused. Again, I am so sorry that you all have had to go through this. Guest carrie, I can understand your sarcasm. It comes from frustration. I hope someone, someday (soon) figures out what's going on here because I really don't believe it's 'anxiety' related. Hang in there everyone.

Hi everyone - It's Nurse Di responding again about all this breast pain/burning stuff going on. I have read with great interest all your postings since I last wrote. It is interesting to note that there are other major postings on this forum about breast pain/burning. I am so amazed! And saddened at the same time. I still think this has all has to do with arthritis/stress/fibromylacia etc. but I am not sure how or why. But, there is enough of us out there who suffer from all this to start our own study! I guess the old saying "misery loves company" holds true. But, just reading your stories makes me feel better, somehow although I feel badly that we can't get this pain diagnosed. As I have said before and will say again, women are low priority when it comes to medical research. Almost all drug studies are done on "men in their 30's" because the drug companies do not care about testing women unless it has to do with breast cancer or hormones - then they are "all over it". However, there is a new 4 year drug study coming out next month concerning women and aspirin so watch for all the press on that. So, hang in there all my suffering sisters. There is safety in numbers. I also feel badly for all of us. Be rest assured, if this were a man suffering from pain and burning in his penis, it would have been solved 10 years ago! (the following comment is from someone who has been in the medical profession for longer then I care to mention and can say such things!) take care all of you and keep the comments coming!

UPDATE... INTERESTING.

Most of you here may have read my very lenghthy original posting. If not, read it and compare...

I have interesting news...

I have since my last posting ( a few after the long orig. one ) had many tests done.

I have had all the major testing done. There apparently are no more to be done at this point. If you read all of my postings, you can see what I was tested for. All negative thank GOD!

Finally, I have had two discoveries of which one I would have never attributed until it happened to me...

ONE: I had a NERVE CONDUCTION TEST that showed what my Chiropractor did not see on his xrays. I have a PINCHED NERVE IN MY NECK-causing the pain in the back of my head and upper back-it radiates-which is normal for a pinched nerve in the neck. ALSO, I HAVE A PINCHED NERVE IN MY LEFT UPPER ARM-causing pain in my entire arm like a case of terrible menstrual cramps that don't go away. I will see my MD for a follow up of their findings. I went to UC Davis Hosp Neuro clinic for this test, as per my MD THINKING I HAD A PINCHED NERVE IN MY WRIST OR CARPUL TUNNEL WHICH IS NOT TRUE.

TWO: Have any of you had AMAGAMS? SILVER FILLINGS IN YOUR MOUTH? WELL..
I have 7, since I was under the age of 10, I am now 32. IF ANY OF YOU HAVE THEM LOOK UP "MERCURY TOXICITY AND/OR ALLERGIES TO METAL" You will find most of your symptoms there. I found like 10 out of 12 were mine without exaggeration! I went to the dentist and had them take the entire left side fillings out and refill with porcelin and that night, I felt a million times better. The energy I thought left me permanently came back, the red out of my cheeks left completely and I had no pain the usual areas of my body. I am having the right side one this morning. Also, if anyone still has wisdom teeth in, get them out. I found out that the top left wisdom is half way into my left sinus and the top right is getting there! I also have pain in my lower jaw for some time now and that is my bottom wisdom. I feel it now. My dentist also said that it is rare for someone to have toxicity to mercury fillings that whether or not someone can have it from them is "controversial" between dentists. All I know is that the same night I had them out, I felt instant relief and a major difference in how i felt and looked was apparent to others! Even my next visit after to my dentist last week she and one of the girls in her office said separately, "you look great compared to every time you havve been in here-much healthier and not in tears" my dentist said I looked "vibrant" with no red face. I am curious after I get these pinched nerves taken care of and my teeth taken care of in full, just how I will feel in the end when I feel 50 times better already!

I highly advise you check into these things ladies! I am glad I didnt exept 'ANXIETY" to be the answer to my constant sickness. I have not taken anything for almost a month that I was prescribed because I tried it then and it either made me feel worse or was totally ineffective.

Stick to your instincts. I am also now getting an MRI on my entire body from head to toe, per my pressing also...

Hi Christina

Your story is absoloutely amazing! Someone else that I work with had also told me about the metal fillings in your mouth being affected with all of our problems but i am really thinking that it could be pinched nerves like you said. I am so glad to here that all of your tests all came out negative....what a relief heh? All of my tests came out negative also other than they found a slight heart murmor which is the regurgetation kind but they said it's nothing to worry about. I haven't gotten the burning pain in some time but it still comes and goes about once a week. I guess it is better then all day.It is also now in my left side of my neck and in my face and around my lips. It's like a tingling sensation and kinda gets numb but dr.s say it is not a stroke but it really scares me when it happens. But like i said things have gotten better but i have been taking zoloft (an anti-depressant) which is used not only for depression but moreso for stress and i haven't had much problems thank the lord above! So maybe mine is just stress but i still wonder what and why it happens still becasue i feel stress free most of the time when it does happen. Who knows.....it's still a mystery and hopefully someday one of us ladies can unravel the mystery!!! But in the meantime what else can we do but hang in there....so god bless us all!!!!

Diane,

Thank you so much for your information and professional thoughts on this subject. I still have this burning in my left breast close to the sterumn that I have had for three years now. It does not radiate like it did before, but it is constant and wearing a bra makes it hurt more. I don't think it is costochronditis, for anti inflammatories do not help or relieve. My massage theripist says the tender area she feels should not be so tender after three years, but my chiropractor tells me differently. My ribs are torqued and I have bulging disks in my lower back. I have to think it is all related.

I don't have fibromyalgia either. It is a mystery and all I know is there is chronic inflammation which I can't relieve. Asprine may be the answer. I will await the results of any new studies you are aware of.

I have been having the same symptoms that you are all describing. I also have a sore spot along the side of my left breast. Sometimes it is better, but then comes back. I stopped wearing an underwire bra, thinking that was the problem. When my arm brushes along my side, it feels tender at times- but not always. I also have a burning, tingling, aching feeling in my left upper arm that sometimes moves to my lower forearm. I had some heart tests done in the fall. I had been having lots of palpatations. I am worried and have an appt. with the ob/gyn coming up. I never had anxiety problems before, but had a panic attack two weeks ago. Thought I wa having a heart attack. I guess the worry makes it worse. I hate this!!! It makes me so aware of every little twinge. Anyway, glad to hear that I am not alone. Thanks to all for listening!

Hi Everyone,

I seem to belong on this board! I have very similar aches/pains...

I am 37 years old and the first time I experienced chest pains, tenderness, etc.. was 13 years ago. The doctor was stumped, but when they did blood work on me I was diagnosed with lupus. (I have no other symptoms of lupus) After taken anti-inflammatories for 2 months I decided to stop taking the medication and the pain subsided after about 6 months. I was told that it was basically muscular/skeletal inflammation caused by the lupus and related to stress factors in my life (I was getting married at the time). I have not had THAT TYPE OF PAIN until recently. I have had some minor flareups but not to that extent. Usually ibuprofen or aleve do the trick.. However, 8 weeks ago I came down with pneumonia and the pneumonia was gone after a week of anti-biotics, but the chest pain, soreness in breast, sore in armpits, bra uncomfortable, can barely sit up sometimes - has not gone away!! I have gone to a new primary doctor who diagnosed me with costocondritis, prescribed an anti-inflammatory (the over the counters were not working) KETOPROFEN and told me to give it a week, and if it does not work then she also precribed a low dose steroid. I am on day 2 of the ketoprofen and feel a little better.. but not too optomistic because I have good/bad days and this one is probably just a good day. I just want anyone who is reading this to have their doctors do blood work to check for lupus or rheumetoid arthritis (if they have not done so).... this may be the culprit. Unfortunately there is no "one" cure for all of us.. hopefully this website will help out! If this round of anti-inflammatory or steroids do not work I may try the vitamin E. I am glad I found this site... thanks for listening.. I will let you know how I respond to the medication!

Hi everyone AGAIN - Nurse Di here. I am STILL reading with amazement all your messages and wonder what the heck is going on with all of us. I, myself, had a flair up for about a week - who knows why. I surely do not. But, I do know that scarey feeling that you are all talking about. I am interested in the lupus diagnosis however as I am fairly convinced that all this soreness etc could infact, be an autoimmune something. But, as to how this how fits together is still a mystery to me. What really boggles my mine is how big this little segment on the forum is getting and how many of us have the same symptoms. So, what do we have here - arthritis, anxiety, lupus - hmmmm who knows. But, I read all of your messages and when I am having a bad day just feel so much better knowing you are all out there with the same symptoms as me. I am going to do some research on lupus as well as rheumotoid arthritis (one of my aunts had r. arthritis) and I will get back to you as soon as I have drawn some conclusions. I am tired of doctors scaring everyone half to death with suggestions of biopsys, mammograms, etc,etc and "mysterious looking cysts or who knows what" when they look at our symptoms. Let me tell you for sure....radiation is NOT good for you - why do you think they put a lead apron on you and the rest of the dental staff hides behind walls when you are getting x-rays done at the dentist? Does that tell you something? well, duh-it does me! So be careful when extra radiation seems to be the order of the day. So, continue to write your stories and together we might be able to solve some of this pain. I love reading your messages. When I come home from a long day at the hospital, I often go to this website and read away - it is very therapeutic. Take care and thanks for your thoughts and insites.

Hello again ladies -
I just caught up with the postings here and it strikes me as extremely odd that, for the vast majority of us, the pain and burning we experience is in our LEFT breast and not our right. I am actually left-handed, and wonder if any of you are and if that has anything to do with it. Why wouldn't stress affect us equally on the right and left sides? Just wondering ...

Keep on posting!

I had the pain in my right breast, armpit, hand etc. Since the rheumatologist told me it was stress induced I decided to change my attitude. I was very happy I wasn't diagnosed with fibromyalgia but didn't want to take the antidepressant he prescribed me in a low dose for fatigue. I decided to do something for me...and funnily enough the pain has not returned. I saw the R late Jan. Early days yet some fatigue and joint pain - but I do think it's me stressing myself out. I looked up ailments caused by stress and found something called the tired or busy woman syndrome. Has anyone heard of this? I think theres something in it for people.

I also find everyone's posts interesting. It is comforting to know that other people can relate. I went to the doctor Friday - I decided I'm sick of putting up with this. He scheduled me to see a rheumatologist in 2 1/2 months!!! That seems like a long time to wait. He also prescribed antidepressants for me. I figured he would since I was crying!:( I don't think they realize how tiring this gets day after day. No wonder a person gets a little anxious!

Hello everyone! I am a 19 year old female with the same problem. Wow! Am I glad i found this site! I just spent the past 2 hours crying because my chest was burning so badly and i was afraid to go to sleep cause i didn't think i would wake up. I seriously thought that I could possibly have a heart attack. I know that I have a heart murmur too, so that scared me a little. AND I went to the science museum today with my boyfriend and there was a machine there that you put your hands on and it shows you your heart beat...and mine was soooo iregular, and fast!! My boyfriends was perfectly normal. Then we took a blood pressure test and mine was 120 90! And that is at a resting rate...maybe i was just nervous, i don't know. But I have been having this burning feeling on the bottom left side of my left breast and in my left armpit for about 4-5 months now. I find it interesting that a lot of your doctors mentioned stress cause i just moved, so maybe that has something to do with it???? If anyone has any other information about irregular heart beats or anything i would very much appreciate it!! Good luck to all of you!

About a year and a half ago I was having severe chest pains. Had a heart catherization performed - my heart was fine. I was 51 at the time. The doctors finally agreed it was arthritis of the sternum, brought on by heavy lifting when cleaning out my father's house when he passed away. Was told to take Advil, which helped. But within the last 2 months, I have tender spots on the top of my left breast, left shoulder pain, left elbow pain and pain in my ring and little fingers, sometimes pain under my left breast to the point I can't breathe. I am wondering if my symptoms are getting worse as far as the sternum is concerned or maybe this does have something to do with my heart. It's very scary! I have not had the burning that some of you have but the chest pain is very painful. I have an appointment with a new primary care physician next week and will discuss all this with her then. I'll let you know what she says. I am hoping that seeing a woman physician will get better answers. Male doctors do not seem to listen as well to my complaints.
